The earliest predecessor to the Kongsberg church dates back to 1640 when there was an evacuation of citizens from the town of Kongsberg to Oslo due to military conflicts. This led to the establishment of a new church in Kongsberg and in 1645 the new church was completed and dedicated to St. Olav (this was the first dedicated church in the area).
