Kaupanger Stave Church In Norway: History,Facts, & Services
Kaupanger Stave Church is the oldest remaining stave church in Norway and one of the best-preserved in Scandinavia. The original church was built in the mid-12th century and later extended in the 14th century. The church consists of 24 large timber posts arranged in a circle to form the walls and roof. Inside, the church has a high, vaulted ceiling supported by vaulted arches, a raised chancel, a choir, and traditional Norwegian ornamentation.
History
The original stave church was constructed in the mid-12th century in the municipality of Sogndal in the county of Sogn og Fjordane. It was likely established by the nearby local monastery of Kaupanger. Over time, additions such as the Gothic chancel and a sacristy were added. In the 17th century, a völva altar was constructed and the walls were decorated with murals of saints.
The church also underwent several renovations over the years in order to keep it in good condition. In 1840, a new bell tower was built, followed by the installation of a new organ in 1895, and a new glass window with scenes from the life of St. Olav in 1918.
