Jesu Kristi Kirke av Siste Dagers Hellige (LDS) is a worldwide religious movement headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah. Founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith, the LDS Church includes by far the largest group of Latter-day Saints (LDS) in the world. It currently claims more than 15 million members. The church promotes a code of health, called The Word of Wisdom, and encourages members to practice principles such as marriage and family unity, hard work, and abstinence from sexual relations outside of marriage. It is governed by a President of the Church, who is assisted by a Quorum of Twelve Apostles and an approved body of officers. Lay members help govern through their participation in local congregations, called wards or branches. The church has an extensive welfare system for its members, as well as an extensive system of temples. The church also maintains universityes, hospitals, and other charitable enterprises.
