The Zona Arqueológica Zempoala - Veracruz in Mexico is an archaeological complex dedicated to a number of gods associated with water. Worshipers of this area often devoted their efforts to Hyokan, the god of rain, lightning and thunder, and Tonacatlhuecuhtli, the god of maize and fertility. Religious ceremonies often involved sacrifice, as offerings were made of food, clothing, and even children to ask for blessings from the gods or in hopes of achieving immortality.
