History:

is a city and municipality located in the south of the Mexican state of Campeche. It is situated at 18°25'N, 90°32'W, on the east bank of the Mezcalapa River, and is the administrative seat of the surrounding municipality of the same name. Becan was founded by the Maya in the Classic Period (250-900 AD). It is a large archaeological site of around 5 km2 and is enclosed by a wall measuring about 4.5 km in length. It served as the main base of the Cocom kings when the city was at its peak during the 9th century AD. The city was eventually abandoned in the early 10th century, likely due to increasing pressure from the Toltec and other peoples of central Mexico.
