The story of the appearance of the Virgin Mary at La Salette is believed by many to have occurred in the early 1800s; however, the actual date is unknown. According to the story, the Virgin Mary appeared to two children aged 11 and 15, Maximin Giraud and Melanie Calvat, while they were tending to cows. The Virgin then began to speak to them, asking if they could build a church in the area to bring people back to the Catholic faith.
