The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was founded in 1830 by Joseph Smith and five other men, who beginning in 1823 said they were being led by the Lord in a series of visions. During the Church's first two decades, its members were persecuted and driven out of states by local governments and mobs. In 1844, Smith was murdered while in jail awaiting trial on charges of treason in Carthage, Illinois. After Smith's death, Brigham Young lead a large group of members to the area that is now Utah and their descendants constitute the majority of current Latter-day Saints.
