History:

The Sheikh Abdullah Al Salem Cultural Centre (SASCC) in Kuwait City was established in 2016 with the support of His Highness Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the Emir of Kuwait, to promote cultural development and education in Kuwait. The Centre is located in a 27-hectare site on the Kuwait Bay and is currently the largest museum complex in the Middle East. The Centre was named after Sheikh Abdullah bin Sabah Al Salem Al Sabah, a 20th century leader and educator in Kuwait. He was an advocate of democracy, reform, modern education and the arts in Kuwait, and was paramount in establishing Kuwait’s first university in 1966. The SASCC project began in 2009, when the Emiri decree was issued setting up the Kuwait Education and Science and Culture Ministry. The Centre was conceived as a major component of the country’s Culture Strategy, launched to make Kuwait into a major cultural centre in the region. The Centre aims to educate and entertain people from all walks of life, featuring a variety of educational and cultural activities. The Centre consists of five main buildings, namely the History Museum, Natural History Museum, Space Museum, Communication Museum and the National Library. It also features an Art Gallery, performing arts theatre, retail and dining outlets, and an amphitheatre. The Centre houses over 300 interactive multimedia programmes and exhibitions, to make Kuwait’s past and present visible. The Centre has also secured many partners in the education sector to offer courses and seminars for adults and children alike.
