History:
The site of the Umayyad Mosque was originally the site of a Roman Temple dedicated to Jupiter, which was then followed by a Christian basilica built in the 6th century AD. The basilica was destroyed by an earthquake in the late 7th century and was then replaced with the Umayyad Mosque. The mosque was originally built by caliph al-Walid I in 691 and dedicated to him. Over time, it underwent several renovations and additions and became the Grand Mosque of Damascus as we know it today.
