Um er-Rasas (Kastrom Mefa’a) In Jordan: History,Facts, & Services
History:
In 1984 archaeologists were informed about the presence of a formidable amount of archaeological finds in the encompassing area of Um er-Rasas. After a survey of the area, the expedition of the German Protestant Institute of Archaeology found evidence of an incredibly large settlement, covering up to 100 hectares. These remains were attributed to the ‘Rasas Culture’, containing ruins of churches and public buildings of the Roman… Greek, Byzantine and early Islamic periods, indicating that Um er-Rasas was an important city of that time. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.

-Archaeological excavations uncovered a number of buildings, including three churches, many domestic and public buildings dating from the Roman, Byzantine and Umayyad eras, as well as burial courtyards, tombs and a large quantity of mosaic floors. -Visible at the site are two defensive towers from the Umayyad period, which most likely surrounded the early Islamic settlement. -The site also features a crypt which contained remains of Ten Commandments written in Mosaic.

Um er-Rasas is open to visitors and offers guided tours, where tourists can learn about the rich history of the site, through learning about its archaeological data, layers and buildings. Additionally, the Jordanian Department of Antiquities also organises lectures, workshops and conferences at the site, to show its cultural and historical importance.This beautiful church in Jordan has made a lot of significance in the past.
