History:
In 1984 archaeologists were informed about the presence of a formidable amount of archaeological finds in the encompassing area of Um er-Rasas. After a survey of the area, the expedition of the German Protestant Institute of Archaeology found evidence of an incredibly large settlement, covering up to 100 hectares. These remains were attributed to the ‘Rasas Culture’, containing ruins of churches and public buildings of the Roman… Greek, Byzantine and early Islamic periods, indicating that Um er-Rasas was an important city of that time. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jordan.
