History:

The Dead Sea occupies a special place in the history of both Jordan and Israel. The sea has been an important source of salt, minerals and source of water, since ancient times. In Jordan, the Dead Sea was first colonized by tribes of the Amorites thousands of years ago. The city of Jericho, located near the northern end of the sea, was one of the first cities to be founded in the area. During the time of King David, it is believed that the sea was called the Salt Sea, and the area around it, the "Salt Valley". The Dead Sea has also been an important source of minerals for trade and industry. In 1892, the Palestine Potash Company was established, which used the sea’s minerals to manufacture fertilizers and chemical products.
