History:

Aqaba Marine Park was established in 1998 by the Jordanian Ministry of Tourism in collaboration with the Royal Marine Conservation Society of Jordan (JREDS) to protect the fragile marine life in the Gulf of Aqaba. In 2000, the park was declared a protected area and a breeding ground for endangered species such as sea turtles. It is one of Jordan’s main ecotourism destinations, dedicated to the protection of its unique coral reefs. The area is ideal for diving, snorkeling and other activities such as cycling, birdwatching and fishing. In 2007, the region's reefs were evaluated and found to be in relatively good condition, although suffers from illegal fishing and from boat anchors, which threatens local coral and fish species, as well as from pollution. To limit the impact of humans on the environment, mooring buoys have been installed in Aqaba and a few anchoring zones designated. The marine park is home to a variety of aquatic life, including sea turtles, molluscs, hard and soft corals, and several hundred fish species and invertebrates, such as crabs and seahorses. Monitors are in place to ensure that the fishing regulations are implemented and some valuable resources, such as dugongs, dolphins, turtles, and various endangered species, are preserved. A sustainable fishing program was also established based on the scientifically backed advice of JREDS. Aqaba Marine Park has been commended for its conservation efforts and successes over the years, such as the development of conservation and management plans, public awareness campaigns and a commitment to monitoring the area. In 2011, it was awarded The Environmental Synergy Award from the Jordanian Ministry of Environment, for demonstrating excellence in environment protection and promotion, and biodiversity conservation. Visitors to Aqaba Marine Park can take part in activities such as boat trips, reef snorkeling, bait-casting, reef-walking, and kayaking. They are also able to bring along their own equipment for fishing, but must strictly adhere to park regulations. Aqaba Marine Park’s main purpose is to protect the fragile environment of the Gulf of Aqaba, its wildlife, and its people. You must visit one of these historical places in Jordan on your Jordan tour
