Saint Peter in Gallicantu In Jerusalem: History,Facts, & Services
Saint Peter in Gallicantu In Jerusalem is an ancient Christian church that stands at the foot of the side of Mount Zion in the Old City of Jerusalem. The name of the church is taken from the Latin for the “cock-crow of St. Peter", noting the Biblical account where Saint Peter, after denying Jesus three times, heard the rooster crow before realizing his mistake and breaking down in repentance. The church marks Peter’s original confession of faith and his reaffirmation as the leader of the apostles. Saint Peter in Gallicantu has a long history, going back to at least the fifth century, to the time of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great. The church still stands today and serves as a primary destination for many Christian pilgrims visiting the Holy Land.
