The church is said to house the site where Helena, mother of Emperor Constantine, discovered the True Cross upon which Jesus was crucified. The chapel was first built in the fourth century AD by Helena and was later renovated by the Franciscans in the thirteenth century. It is today a popular pilgrimage site.
