The Catholic Church of the Annunciation in Jerusalem is a major site of Catholic pilgrimage. It is located in the boutique village of Nazareth, and marks the anniversary of Mary’s conception as the mother of Jesus Christ. History:
The Church stands on the site where the Archangel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would be the mother of the Messiah. The original site was discovered as early as the 4th century A.D. by Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine. In the 19th century, the region was home to both Arabic and Greek Orthodox Christians, and the site was divided between them. In 1942, Pope Pius XII issued a proclamation that all Catholics should rebuild the site in honor of the Annunciation. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jerusalem.
