As a part of the United Church of Christ, the church holds to traditional Christian beliefs, but with a progressive outlook and emphasis on tolerance and understanding of other faiths. St John's United Church was founded in 1967 by a group of Edina residents who desired to establish an open and affirming church in their community. The church was originally housed in a small church located in downtown Edina before moving to its current location in the late 1970s. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jamaica.

St John's United Church is currently led by the Rev. Jim Antal, who has been the Senior Pastor of the church since 2015. The church has an active congregation of over 200 members who participate in a variety of weekly ministries, including Sunday services, Children's Ministries, youth groups, small groups, and serving opportunities in the community.
