The First Church of Christ originated in the 1630s. It was founded by English Puritans who were fleeing religious persecution in Europe. The church was initially known as the ‘Church of Christ at New Haven’ and it held its first meeting on the 16th of October 1639. The church was the first to be established in The New World and it publicly declared its commitment to the Reformation on the 28th of December 1639 at its first ordination. Over time, the church has grown to an international fellowship of congregations. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Jamaica.
