Founded in 1865, Coffee Grove was the only African American-led Seventh Day Baptist (SDB) church in the nation until the late 1970s when three others were established. In its more than 150 years of existence, the church has served as an important educational, spiritual, and community center for the Percy community and the surrounding area. Coffee Grove Seventh Day Baptist Church was founded in 1865 by former slaves who wanted to follow the Jewish practice of worshiping on Saturday (the Sabbath). The original members of the church were Abraham Mount, Jessie Anderson, Joel Walls, and Hila Anderson. Since its founding, the church has been led by African American pastors and lay members.
