Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints In Jamaica: History,Facts, & Services
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a worldwide Christian faith whose mission is to help people come closer to Jesus Christ. Founded in 1830 in New York, the church has now grown to approximately 16 million members in over 150 countries. Its core doctrines are centered on the belief in Jesus Christ’s atonement and that through his saving grace, people can become closer to God and follow his commandments.
The church’s history originates with its first prophet, Joseph Smith, who received a personal revelation from God that he would be the one to bring about God’s restoration of the true church of Jesus Christ to the earth. After Smith and his followers moved to Ohio, then Missouri, settling in Nauvoo, Illinois, Smith organized the Church in April 1830, and the Book of Mormon was published in March of the same year.
An integral part of the Church’s history and doctrine is the Book of Mormon, which includes writings of prophets in the ancient Americas who had lived under the same covenant God has with his people today. The Church’s headquarters is located in Salt Lake City, Utah, and it is made up of various congregations known as wards and stakes throughout the world.
Church services usually begin with two hours of instruction, singing, and prayer. Sacrament meetings are held in all congregations and include blessings and teachings by priesthood leaders. Family home evenings, scout meetings and other programs often occur during the week. Members of the Church also perform acts of service in their communities, like humanitarian service and missionary work.
