History The Church of God in Christ was founded in 1897 in Lexington, Mississippi. Charles Harrison Mason, an ordained Baptist minister, had become a member of a group of preachers affiliated with the Christian Union Church. After disputes over the missionary focus of this church, Mason and several other ministers withdrew to found the Church of God in Christ. Mason was elected to serve as the church's Presiding Bishop. Facts COGIC is the largest Pentecostal denomination in the United States and the fourth largest church in the country. As of 2020, it has more than 6.5 million adherents. Most of the members are African American. The church operates separate organizations for men, women, and young people. It also has a seminary and Bible college.
