Brown's Town Baptist Church is a historic church located in Brown's Town, Jamaica. It was founded in 1818 and is one of the oldest churches of its kind in the Caribbean. The church is an important architectural and cultural landmark in Jamaica.
History
Brown's Town Baptist Church was founded in 1818 by a group of 12 emancipated slaves. It is believed that the original name of the church was the Zion Hill Primitive Baptist Church, but was later changed to Brown's Town Baptist Church. The church was designed by local craftsmen. It is built of lime-treated wooden frames, with walls of wattles and daub (mud and sticks) covered with wattle and daub plaster.
Facts
Brown's Town Baptist Church is the oldest remaining Baptist Church in Jamaica and one of the oldest in the British West Indies. It is one of few remaining historic Anglican churches still standing in Jamaica. The church has been designated as a National Monument and is part of the Jamaica National Heritage Trust.
