The Ponte Sanguinario (Bloody Bridge), located in the town of Volterra, province of Pisa, Tuscany, Italy, is a bridge from the Roman period which predates the Middle Ages. The bridge was probably built in the 1st century B.C., at the beginning of the Roman Empire's domination, when the town of Volterra was a road junction of strategic importance It links the bottom of the hill, where the old Etruscan town is situated, to the Via Aurelia, the main roads linking Rome to the north of Italy. The name of the bridge comes from the Battle of Montaperti, which was fought near Volterra in September 1260. It's likely that it was used during the battle, as this was a key site in the communications of the 1260s. The bridge was a key factor in the defeat of Florence in the battle, and after a bloody siege lasting months, the bridge's name was changed to "Ponte Sanguinario", or "Bloody bridge".
