St Brigid's Church was founded by Irish immigrant Monsignor John Brady. Brady had formerly been a parishioner of St Patrick's Cathedral and was instrumental in the founding of the church. He dedicated the church to St Brigid, a patron saint of Ireland. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Ireland.
