It was built by the local Catholic community beginning in 1890 and is dedicated to St. Brigid, the patron saint of Ireland. The church has a long history stretching all the way back to the 16th century, when the area was ruled by the ruling family of the O'Madden clan. In more recent times, the church has been modernised and extended to cater to larger congregation sizes. It is one of the best churches in Ireland which you must visit.

The Roman Catholic parish of Portumna was established in the 16th century, though the church itself was not established until 1889-1890. The foundation stone was laid on 27th May 1889, and the church was solemnly opened on 4th November of the same year. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Ireland.

St Brigid's Church is constructed of limestone blocks which were quarried nearby. The walls are just over 2 feet thick, and the bell tower rises to a height of some 79 feet, which stands out against the flat countryside surrounding the town. The interior of the church is quite ornate, with a variety of motifs, crafted in high quality Italian marble.
