History:

The original monastery is said to have been founded in 1229 by the O’Lavergamain family as a daughter house of St. Mary’s Abbey, at Newtownbutler. The monastery was a centre of learning, crafting and hospitality, and is said to have had over 1,000 cells within its walls. The monastery prospered until the 1600s when it was destroyed during the Plantation of Ulster in 1610, and the conventual buildings were burned.
