Architecture:
Al-Nuri Mosque, located in the heart of Baghdad, is one of the oldest and most significant mosques in the city. Built in 1172, the mosque is believed to be the site of the tomb of the legendary glory of Baghdad, the 12th-century Shia spiritual leader, Sheikh al-Nuri. The mosque was destroyed by the Islamic State in 2017, but has since been reconstructed with the help of international and local donations. The mosque stands out with its unique architectural style, combining the traditional Persian-Islamic architectural style and the Abbasid-style structures. The mosque consists of a prayer hall, a library, a seraglio (place of residence for a sultan's family and courtiers), and a patio surrounded by a surrounding garden. The mosque's most notable feature is its minarets, rising to a height of 40 meters (131 feet). The dome, adorned with an inscription of the names of the twelve Shia Imams, is made of marble and cedar wood and painted in gold. The internal walls of the mosque also feature painted inscriptions, while the external walls feature ceramic decorations. The mosque's courtyard is also impressive, known for its ornate gardens and fountains. The entrance to the mosque is through a grand archway, flanked by two smaller arches. A paved courtyard, lined with trees, connects the entrance to the mosque. Together, the mosque and its courtyard form a tranquil and peaceful place of prayer. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
Visiting Hours:
The Al-Nuri Mosque is open to visitors from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM on weekdays, and 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Fridays. best mosque in the world.
