Architecture:
Al-Mashhad is one of the oldest mosques in Iraq and is one of the most unique mosques of all time. It is located in Basra, and dates back to the 8th century. Its architecture is a blend of traditional Islamic and Persian design influences. The mosque features two minarets, a main prayer hall, a courtyard, and a dome. The prayer hall and courtyard are connected with transition arches that are decorated with muqarnas, which are small, ornamental, vaulted ceilings that are traditional in Islamic architecture. The prayer hall has a marble mihrab (niche indicating direction of prayer), and an ornately decorated qibla (facing wall). The dome has 8 ribs that are supported by four graceful arches. The mosque also features two ornately decorated marble minarets, each with three balconies. The exterior of the mosque is decorated with decorative brickwork and stucco, and the interior walls are adorned with colorful tilework. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
