The first original structure of this mosque was designed during the reign of Shah Ismail and was built in 1504. Later in 1650, it was reconstructed and it consists of four main iwans, each iwan with a courtyard. In the inner portions of each iwan, there are four minarets, stucco ornamentation, and tiled decorative works. In the eastern part of the mosque, there is a glorious tumbbad-khaneh, which contains the Tomb of Sultan Ali Shah Isma'il. It is one of the most famous mosque in Iran which you must visit.

The Jameh Mosque of Shahr-e Kord in Iran is an iconic example of the four-iwan plan, a type of central-domed mosque structure whose design is credited to the 11th century Seljuk architect Ibn al-Aqtar. The mosque is constructed from locally sourced yellow and pink limestone, and features two massive iwans, or portals, which provide entryways into its spatial system. Inside the mosque are two large domes, one over the center of the nave and the other over the mihrab (prayer niche). The central dome is surrounded by four smaller domes which sit atop the four iwans. The interior is decorated with intricate geometric patterns and a variety of colours, and a large qiblah (prayer wall) at the back of the nave contains verses from the Quran. The eastern iwan has an additional prayer niche, and is used as a madrasa (Islamic school). A courtyard surrounded by a portico is located at the front of the mosque, and is an important place of congregational prayer. The mosque is an example of the classical Persian style of mosque architecture, and has been extensively restored in recent years.
