The mosque is an example of the eight-iwan plan which was characteristic of Iranian architecture in the Seljuk era. The mosque was built in the tenth century with elements of pre-Islamic materials and some later additions. It is composed of a large central sanctuary (Iwan) surrounded by four iwans on the four sides. The Iwan is covered by magnificent stalactite vaults with two monumental arcades on either side. The other iwans are decorated with beautiful glazed tiles, inscriptions in Kufic scripts and carved stucco. In the centre, the mosque is domed by a double-shell square chamber with an octagonal lantern above and carved stucco decoration below. The innermost chamber has an octagonal plan and is surrounded by eight half-vaults forming a heptagon. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
