Atiq Mosque or Atiq Jame' Mosque (Persian: مسجد عتیق) is a historical mosque in Shiraz, Iran. It is located in the old and historical core of Shiraz near the Andarzgoo Boulevard. The mosque dates back to the Buyid dynasty, and was built between 10th and 11th centuries CE. The mosque consists of a portico, prayer hall, winter temple, two large courtyards, and main dome chamber. It was renovated in the Safavid era in 1068 AH (1658 CE) and once again in the 18th century. The minarets, mehrab (altar) and the main dome are the most noteworthy features of the mosque. It is one of the most famous mosque in Iran which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Atiq Mosque of Shiraz is a 14th century mosque, and it is renowned for its archetypical four-iwan (hall) structure and its brilliant tiling. The design of the mosque includes four halls, each one built with a high entrance door and a single-shell dome. The mosque is composed of a large centre square surrounded by four iwans partially open to the central square courtyard. Each iwan has a brick dome with a single shell surrounding it. The walls and ceiling of the iwans are extensively decorated with colorful tiles, revealing complex geometric designs, inscriptions, and calligraphy. The tiles feature predominantly blue and turquoise colors, with well-balanced accents of white and red. On the outside, the walls of the iwans are covered with 6-sided latticed windows and stucco designs. One of the largest minarets in Iran is also located at the entrance of the mosque and is decorated with blue and turquoise tiles.
