Great Mosque of East Java, located in Surabaya, East Java, is one of the oldest mosques in Indonesia. Built in 1614, the mosque was originally called Gedung Ketua and was used as a place of worship by the local people of Surabaya. The mosque was later remodeled and expanded into a larger mosque in 1645 and given the current name of Masjid Agung Gedung Ketua. Throughout its history, the Great Mosque of East Java has served as an important center of learning and spiritual education for Muslims in the region. The first school founded by British merchants in 1660 was based in this mosque. Today, the mosque is renowned for its large prayer hall, expansive courtyard, and stunning multicolored roof. The Great Mosque of East Java (GMEJ) is an incredible example of Islamic architecture in Indonesia. Built in the late 19th century, GMEJ is a two-story mosque with five domes, two minarets, and four entrances. The facade of the mosque is ornamented with intricate floral and geometric designs. The main hall is supported by nine pillars that hold up ornately carved wooden arches. The roof is supported by thirty four arches, with an additional five arches serving as the minaret bases. The interior of the mosque is adorned with a variety of ancient Islamic symbols and motifs. The central dome is decorated with intricate geometric shapes and colorful tiles, while the mihrab is further adorned with intricate flowery patterns and gold gilding.
