Overview:
The Visvanatha Swami Temple is one of the famous shrines in Kumbakonam and is one of the most popular temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu in India. The main deity of the temple is Lord Visvanathar and his consort Goddess Thiripurasundari. Along with it, there are several other shrines dedicated to different deities present in the temple. The temple also houses a Grand Mandapa, which stands as a witness to the magnificence and grandeur of the temple complex. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple complex is divided into two sections – the outer enclosure and the inner enclosure. The outer enclosure has the shrines of several gods and goddesses, while the inner enclosure houses the main sanctum. The main sanctum of Visvanatha Swami is surrounded by sixteen small shrines dedicated to various forms of Vishnu. The entrance to the main shrine is guarded by two dwarpalakas – Jaya and Vijaya. The temple also features a huge statue of Lord Vishnu, along with other sculptures and inscriptions depicting various episodes from the Puranas.
