Temple of Mahakaleswara No.12 In India: History,Facts, & Services

,Temple of Mahakaleswara No.12 is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh. It is one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, one of the most revered shrines of Lord Shiva. The temple is situated on the banks of Kshipra River and is also known as Dakshinamurti. A 5-meter tall statue of a Nandi Bull is installed in front of the temple entrance. The temple is said to have been constructed by the Paramara dynasty in the 6th century CE. The temple walls are adorned with beautiful carvings that depict stories from the Hindu scriptures. It has three towers dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Kartikeya. The innermost sanctum houses the sacred Linga, which is worshipped like a living presence of the Almighty God. Some of the prominent features of the temple are a golden cobra hooded over the Shiva Linga and silver-plated Naga or serpent hooded over the entrance gate. The temple also houses numerous idols, both of Shiva and other Gods and Goddesses. Pilgrims perform aarti and bhajans in the temple with great devotion. The history of the temple dates back to the 17th century and is mentioned in the Skanda Purana. According to legend, once Lord Shiva decided to perform a yajna in Ujjain and chose the site for his ritual. The Vilas Raja of Ujjain, Raja Chandrasen, volunteered to offer his prayers to Lord Shiva. The Lord was pleased by his devotion and granted his wish by appearing as an eternal flame atop a hill. This marked the origin of the temple and the Linga that is worshipped in the temple is believed to be the same flame. The temple has many interesting tales associated with it. According to one story, while praying to Lord Shiva a trader, Vajee Gautam, lost his bag of coins. Upon searching for it, he found the coins in a basin near the temple sanctum. He quickly offered these coins to the deity as a sign of gratitude and was blessed with financial prosperity. In modern times, the temple is managed by the Archeological Survey of India, under the supervision of the Ujjain Municipal Corporation. The temple hosts numerous festivals such as Mataji Jayanti, Navratri Utsav, Shivratri Utsav, Varuthini Ekadashi and Kumbha Mela. The temple also attracts a large number of devotees seeking blessings of Lord Shiva.
