Overview:
urg fort is a fortress built by the Maratha ruler Shivaji Maharaj in the 17th century. It is located near the Konkan coast of Maharashtra, India. It is a iconic fortification with an array of large walls, towers, gates and defensive works. The fort covers an area of more than 48 acres and is one of the important fortress in the district of Sindhudurg. Sindhdurg fort This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The fortification consists of two lines of high walls with a moat in between. These walls have 12 gates, most of which are metal-plated. Inside this fort are places of worship, water tanks, and magazines for storing arms. The high walls and six bastions were constructed for defensive purposes. The history of Sindhdurg fort goes back to 1664 when the naval chief of Shivaji – Kanhoji Angre – was unable to contain the aggressive Portuguese forces in the Konkan coast.
