The Old Water Supply Scheme was a system of water delivery in England, Wales and some parts of Scotland from the early 18th century to the late 19th century. The system was devised to provide households with water for everyday use, and was developed before the age of democracy and public health initiatives. History:
The Old Water Scheme consisted of a network of aqueducts, tunnels and reservoirs which were used to collect and distribute water from rivers and streams to households in towns and cities. The pipes were generally made of iron and the water was delivered at a very slow rate, allowing the mineral content to be absorbed. Pumps and horse-drawn carts were used to lift the water from reservoirs and transport it to the customers.
