Overview:
Mukunteswara Temple with Inscriptions is a Shaiva shrine located in Papanasam village of Thanjavur district in Tamil Nadu, India. Parts of this temple are believed to be built during the time of the Rashtrakuta Dynasty, making the temple one of the oldest in the region. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu god Shiva and is famed for its inscriptions and Murtis. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple consists of a main shrine, a few Sanctorums and a pillared hall. The main gopuram (entrance tower) is located on the west side and the sanctum includes a Shiva Lingam. The murtis (idols) of Mukunteswara, Ganapati and Andupudisesvara are also housed within the temple premises. The inscriptions in the temple are some of the earliest found in Tamil Nadu and are from the 9th-13th centuries. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour
