Megalithic cists and cairns, Nallikuppam consist of five megalithic burial grounds, the most significant being the Kattukuppam burial ground where a number of megalithic cists and five cairns have been identified. The megalithic cists are cut from a single blocks of granite and are also known as urn burials. Cairns are circular funerary monuments built with stones and often contain small altars. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Notable features of Megalithic cists and cairns, Nallikuppam include the cists, which are granite and rectangular in shape and range from 2 feet to 5 feet in size and are marked by a number of raised stone circles. The cairns are also marked with a number of stone circles, but these are usually larger in size and slightly conical in shape.
