It is a site of archaeological importance representing a prehistoric burial culture that prevalent among ancient seafaring people of the region between the first century B.C. and the seventeenth century A.D. Megalithic cists and cairns are different kinds of megalithic constructions such as upright stone slabs, circular and rectangular stone cists used to bury the dead. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Some of the prominent features of the megalithic cists and cairns at Manamai include: • Large vertical and horizontal stone slabs called Dolmen, used for burying the dead. • Circular and rectangular stone cists are also seen at the site. • Burial mounds created using heaps of stones collected from the surrounding area. • Stone circles around the burial mounds. • ‘Barrigedros’ or stone structures built as a memorial to the dead.
