This type of construction has been found in England, Wales, Morocco, Portugal, and India. Maganiyam, or Karaikkal Ammaiyar, is the most famous of these megalith sites. It is located in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu, near the city of Madurai. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Maganiyam megalithic site is made up of various stone structures, including dolmens, menhirs, and cists. The cists are the most prominent feature, as they are large and square-shaped tombs made of granite. Inside the cists are the remains of the people who built them. The walls and floors of the cists are decorated with carvings; these carvings and the stones themselves are believed to be some of the oldest examples of art in India.
