Overview:
Lal Masjid (Red Mosque), commonly known as Jamia Masjid Ghazi, is a historic mosque located in Islamabad, Pakistan. Lal Masjid was built in 1965, and is one of the most prominent and famous religious sites in the country. It is situated near the Embassy of Afghanistan and Faisal Mosque in the center of Islamabad, and is known for its red walls and structure. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The mosque comprises of two distinct parts- the upper floor, which has a large open courtyard lined with red carpet, and a lower floor which is made up of two wings that hold two halls. The eastern wing, which is the main section, houses the main prayer hall that can seat up to five hundred people at once. The upper floor also has a seminary on the right side and a shrine dedicated to the memory of the founder, Ghazi Abdul-Wahab, adjacent to the main prayer hall.
