Lakshminarayana Temple Overview The Lakshminarayana Temple is one of the most important and oldest temples in South India. It is located in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh and was constructed in 1520 CE by Chinna Bommala Rama Nayaka, a Nayaka King who ruled over the region. The temple is dedicated to Vishnu and his consort, Lakshmi. It is believed that the two were worshiped in the temple since ancient times. The temple is enclosed within a large compound and consists of a shrine (garbhagriha) for the idols and several small shrines for other deities. Lakshminarayana Temple Prominent Features The Lakshminarayana Temple is constructed of granite and comprises multiple tiers. There are two main towers (gopurams) at the entrance, each of which stands about 50ft tall. The four wings of the temple support the roof and connect six separate mandapas (shrines). Inside, the temple has several intricately carved pillars and walls with a series of images of gods and goddesses. The Garbhagriha is a large hall that holds the idols of Vishnu and Lakshmi. A figure of Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of Vishnu, is also present in the Garbhagriha. Lakshminarayana Temple History The Lakshminarayana Temple has a rich history. It is believed that the temple was established in the 16th century CE by Chinna Bommala Rama Niyaka, the Nayaka King of the region. According to tradition, the temple was built at the site of an old temple, where Vishnu and his sister, Lakshmi, were worshiped by the local population. Following the construction of the Lakshminarayana Temple, it was used as a place of worship by the local kings and their courtiers. Over the centuries, the temple has been refurbished and expanded many times.
