Kushna Stupa known as Jarasandha-ka-Qila In India: History,Facts, & Services

Kushna Stupa, known as Jarasandha-ka-Qila is an ancient Buddhist monument in India. It is located in the Lalitpur district of Uttar Pradesh and is one of the oldest existing monuments in the region. It is said to be built by the Kushan Emperor Kanishka in the 2nd century AD. The Stupa stands as a testament to the legacy of the Kushan Empire and their advancements in the field of religion and architecture. The Kushna Stupa is a huge structure, measuring approximately 225 ft in diameter and rising up to a height of 55 ft. The Stupa is made from mud, brick and mortar and has a large standing dome-like structure at its center. This dome is made from lime mortar, which is believed to have been imported from Bactria, to the north of India. Atop this dome is a large finial, with several smaller ones arranged around the circumference of the Stupa. The Kushna Stupa is encircled by a circumference wall, which is made from fired bricks. Inside the Stupa, the ruins of a large complex containing shrines, stupas and paintings can be found. These structures have been categorized into four different parts, namely the Garbhagriha (central chamber), Dharmagriha (religious chamber), Natagriha (entrance chamber) and Ghumagriha (pavilion). The Kushna Stupa is believed to be the birthplace of Jarasandha, a mythological king who played a significant role in the legendary war of Mahabharata. Hence, it is popularly known as the ‘Jarasandha-ka-Qila’. Apart from its historical importance, the Kushna Stupa also holds great architectural and artistic significance. The grandeur of the Stupa, along with its murals, frescoes and sculptures, makes it one of the most beautiful ancient monuments in India. For these reasons, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Interesting Facts • The Kushan Emperor Kanishka is said to have visited the Kushna Stupa himself. • The Stupa is the only structure ever housed in the region to contain a dome made of lime mortar and fired bricks. • A small stupa, called Chhap Chor, can be found in the northwest corner of the Kushna Stupa. • Artwork on the walls and ceilings of the Kushna Stupa depict scenes from Hindu and Buddhist mythology, as well as everyday life in the Kushan Empire.
