Karna Temple Overview
Karna Temple, a Hindu temple dedicated to Karna (the sixth born of Kunti), is located at Tirunallar (Tiruchendur Taluk), about 5 km from Karaikal beach, in the union territory of Puducherry. It is one of the key temples within the area and popularly venerated by devotees from all over the world.
Karna Temple Prominent Features
Karna Temple is known for its teak wood beams and fine sculptures. The temple is highly decorated with silver and gold leaf gopurams and beautifully carved granite stones. It houses a splendid sculpture of Lord Karna with his four sons, known as the Karna Dvipa. Along with the main deity of Lord Karna, other idols also adorn the premises, such as Lord Shiva, Hanuman and Padmavati. It also contains several puja rooms and meditation halls to facilitate prayer and devotion.
Karna Temple History
The temple is believed to have been built between 15th and 16th century AD by the then rulers of the region. The original temple was destroyed by Muslim invaders during their invasion of South India. The current temple structure was built by Rani Mangammal of Thanjavur. The temple is known for its special festival, ‘Vedagasirappu Thirunal’, when devotees of the temple commemorate the victory of Lord Karna against the Pandavas.

• The temple is known for its large golden chariot, believed to have been gifted by Ramachandra Swami. It is said that during the annual chariot festival, the chariot is pulled around the temple premises.
• The temple is a popular destination for pilgrims and also plays host to some of the most important festivals in the region. The annual Karna Puja and Rath Yatra are the two important festivals celebrated here.
