Overview:
Hill Fort , Namakkal is an ancient fort located in the town of Namakkal, a municipality in the Namakkal district of Tamil Nadu. Built by the Madurai Nayaks, it is situated atop an 200-foot hill and offers sublime views of the Kaveri river and the Namakkal town. This fort has undergone certain modifications from its original construction, yet retains its majestic grandeur, making it one of the most visited tourist destination in Tamil Nadu. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The fort is built with a high boundary wall built with granite stone slabs. The fort has four circular bastions, an acropolis and a temple within the walls. The acropolis is also known as “Krisna Ghattam” as it houses a shrine dedicated to Lord Krishna. The fort also has two temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman and Mariamman. Hill Fort , Namakkal is said to have been built in the 14th century by the Madurai Nayaks. According to legends, the fort was later used as a refuge by Tipu Sultan during the British rule. It was during this period the fort was used as a storehouse and an ammunition depot. Later, in 1833 the fort was conquered by the British.
