The Fort of Aligarh was built in 1524 by the Emperor Akbar and was initially made up of mud. Later on, in 1599, the fort was rebuilt with stone by the Mughal Emperor Akbar in order to make it stronger and more secure. In 1775, the Fort of Aligarh was taken over by the Marathas. They tried to extend the walls and make it stronger but it was not successful. The British later took it over in 1803 and it became a part of the Crown’s domain. In 1857, the fort was attacked by the revolutionaries during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.
