Dharanikota In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
The town of Dharanikota is located on the banks of the River Pennar, near Nellore in Andhra Pradesh. There are references to this place from the time of the Satavahanas, later known as the Chalukyas and Pallavas. The remarkable fort of Dharanikota, which remains intact even today, was built by the Rashtrakuta dynasty in the 9th century. This was one of the most significant dynasties of India at the time. The fort was later colonised by many kings and rulers, including the Nizam of Hyderabad. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most striking feature of Dharanikota is its ancient fort. The fort is built in a Star-shaped pattern with an outer wall and separate compartments, entry gates and watch towers. It is located on top of a small hillock, surrounded by farmlands and small hills. Within the fort, there is a temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, and other small temples. The entrance gates of the fort are made of black stone, and have carvings of mythological figures. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour

The ruins of the fort of Dharanikota provide a remarkable insight into the rich history of the area. It is said that a few parts of the fort are still unexplored. There are also ancient inscriptions on the walls that give information about the past rulers and their conquests. Numerous carved statues of Vishnu, Shiva, and Varaha can also be seen here.
