Brief History:

is Chowk Chabutra Masjid also known as ‘Char Chinar Masjid’ is one of the oldest mosques in the state of Jammu and Kashmir in India. It is believed to have been built in the 16th century by Yousuf Shah Chak, the former ruler of Kashmir. The mosque is located in the middle of a shallow lake in the Fateh Kadal locality of Srinagar, the capital of Jammu and Kashmir. The mosque is also popularly known as ‘Star Shaped Mosque’ due to its unique shape, which is said to be constructed in the Mughal era. It is also said that the architects employed during the rule of Yousuf Shah Chak had designed the four pointed arches of the mosque in such a way that the prayer niche points towards Mecca, the holy city of Islam. The mosque is built out of red sandstone and marble, with the entrance arch made of pietra dura. The mosque has three galleries and the main hall includes a prominent chabootra which is the highest platform in the mosque, and is covered by a mini-dome. It is also believed that the mosque was a place of worship for the royal family during the 16th century. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.

The mosque is decorated with exquisite calligraphy and floral motifs exhibiting the remarkable craftsmanship of the Mughal era. The mosque also features an octagonal corner minaret with open staircases inside on each corner and a domed pavilion at the center. The mosque also has a domed shrine with a rectangular chamber which houses the mihrab wall with beautiful calligraphy designs.
