Overview:
Chor Minar No. 289 Vol III is a four-storeyed stepped tower constructed from stone and red sandstone. It is located close to the Red Fort on Netaji Subhash Marg in Chandni Chawk, Delhi. Its total height is approximately 140 feet and has 379 windows all around. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The tower's arched doorways and balustrades are decorated with Islamic style carvings, flower motifs and geometric designs. At the base level of the tower, there are four recessed balconies that can be used for leisure. It also features four small pavilions, which served as lookout points in ancient times. The Chor Minar No. 289 Vol III tower was constructed by Akbar as a watchtower to keep an eye out for approaching enemies. Later, it was used as a prison where criminals were held and displayed for public humiliation. The tower was damaged during the 1857 Sepoy mutiny and was eventually abandoned.
