Ashokan Rock (Edicts) Overview Ashokan Rock (Edicts) refers to the rock edicts of Emperor Ashoka in India. The edicts are inscribed on the vast majority of the rocks and boulders scattered in the rocky hillocks throughout India. These are believed to be engraved in the early 3rd century BC, during the reign of the Emperor Ashoka. Ashokan Rock (Edicts) Prominent Features The rock edicts contain the edicts of King Ashoka. These edicts elaborate on the principles of Dhamma and Ahimsa (non-violence). The edicts are inscribed in three scripts; Magadhi Prakrit, Sanskrit, and Greek. The major edicts that have been discovered mainly fall into two categories—the Minor Rock Edicts and the Major Rock Edicts. The Minor Rock Edicts are inscribed in both Magadhi Prakrit and Sanskrit, while the Major Rock Edicts are inscribed in Greek, Magadhi Prakrit, and Sanskrit. He had them inscribed on the rocks and boulder hillocks that were spread throughout India. Ashokan Rock (Edicts) Interesting facts -The Lumbini Edict (a type of Minor Rock Edict) is the only one engraved in all three scripts; Magadhi Prakrit, Sanskrit, and Greek. -The Rock Edicts have been scattered in various parts of India, such as the Girnar Hill in Gujarat, the Barabar caves in Bihar, the Udayagiri and Khandagiri Caves in Orissa, and the Sanchi Stupa in Madhya Pradesh. -The rock edicts have been added to the UNESCO World Heritage List and are evaluated as a masterpiece of ancient Indian art and architecture.
