Alamgir Gate In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
Alamgir Gate is located in the old city of Lahore opposite the Royal Mall. It is the oldest gate in Lahore and the city's principal historic gateway. The gate has two stories, with the first constructed by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb in 1673 and the second by the Sikhs later in 1763. It is made of red sandstone and is considered one of the oldest and most important historic monuments in the city. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Alamgir Gate has two stories and is built in traditional Mughal architecture, with a large archway. The gate is intricately decorated with designs made in the stone, featuring a blend of Hindu, Jain, and Muslim motifs. A pair of stone eagles is placed atop the gate, which was common in Mughal architecture. The lower story is adorned with reddish-pink marble, while the inner side of the upper story is decorated with inscriptions made by Mughal Emperors Aurangzeb and Akbar.
